Doctors Without Borders - Managing Medicine in Iraq

Dreamt about becoming an international humanitarian doctor? Always wondered what life is really like working for an organisation like MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières)?

After her medical training, Kaitlin Daw obtained a Master of International Public Health while working predominantly in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Sexual Health and Pediatrics. In 2019 Kaitlin joined MSF as a Medical Activity Manager in Khanaqin, Iraq. Since then she has been completing her general practice training and hopes to embark on further work with MSF.

Being and Becoming

During her specialist training, Angela became a survivor of family violence when her ex-partner assaulted her in 2016. She subsequently became a passionate advocate for women's safety and has spoken publicly about her experience including an incredible TEDx Sydney 2020 talk exploring intimate partner homicide.

Angela completed a Bachelor of Medicine with Distinction through the University of Newcastle in 2011 and later went on to achieve a Masters of Reproductive Medicine through the University of New South Wales. Dr Jay spent much of her Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist training at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney with secondments to Hornsby, Gosford, Port Macquarie, and Coffs Harbour.

Dr Jay is now an Obstetrics and Gynaecology Staff Specialist at John Hunter Hospital, and she is a Medical and Forensic Examiner for the Newcastle Sexual Assault Service. She hopes to inspire you to embrace the role doctors can play as advocates for the most vulnerable people in our communities.

Off the Page: The Art of Clinical Examination

Authors of (our beloved) Clinical Examination and Examination Medicine, Talley & O’Connor are to unite on the NEW22 stage for an unmissable plenary.

Professor Nicholas Talley is considered one of the world’s most influential clinician-researchers. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Medical Journal of Australia, has published over 1000 papers in the peer-reviewed literature and is a Senior Staff Specialist and gastroenterologist at John Hunter Hospital.

Professor Talley is Past President of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (2014-2016) and Past Chair of the Committee of Presidents of Medical Colleges (2015-2017). Currently Distinguished Laureate Professor at the University of Newcastle, he also holds appointments as Adjunct Professor at Mayo Clinic and Foreign Guest Professor at the Karolinska Institute.

While his current research focus is neurogastroenterology and functional gut diseases including the role of inflammation and the microbiome, Prof. Talley is actively interested in climate change and health, immigration and health, health system re-engineering and social justice.

Dr Simon O’Connor is a Cardiologist at The Canberra Hospital and Clinical Senior Lecturer at ANU Medical School. He has been recognised for his key work in medical education at the prestigious British Medical Association (BMA) Medical Book Awards 2018.

Perseverance in Practice

Dr Dinesh Palipana (Order of Australian Medal) is an Australian ED doctor, lawyer and disability advocate who was named Queensland Australian of the Year 2021. During medical school, he overcame adversity to become the first Australian to graduate medical school with a spinal cord injury. Dr Palipana has been a proud advocate for physicians with disabilities, co-founding Doctors with Disabilities Australia. Through his resilience he has demonstrated ways in which doctors, and the wider population can work effectively with disabilities highlighting the changes that need to be made to discriminatory industry guidelines.

Jimmy Jan is a Medical Student, Tik Tok Star and Ambassador for Wings for Life. Jimmy sustained a complete spinal cord injury in August 2021, while skiing in the freestyle park at Perisher. After being airlifted to Sydney for emergency neurospinal surgery, Jimmy took a 4 day break from his studies while in ICU. After this, Jimmy proceeded with his coursework and sat all his semester final exams while in rehab. He also created a TikTok to share his journey and new life in a wheelchair and has since racked up 602K followers. While still in rehab Jimmy became an Ambassador for Wings for Life, an organisation with the goal of finding a cure for spinal cord injuries and also the AMSA 2022 Disability & Inclusion officer.

Hearing and Listening

Professor Kelvin Kong is a proud Worimi man and a highly esteemed Paediatric ENT surgeon who has played a critical role in education, research and advocacy. Professor Kong was the first Indigenous Australian surgeon and currently one of three Indigenous Australian surgeons.

He is an active member of RACS and ASOHNS, serving on multiple advisory Boards and Committees, including the Indigenous Health and Fellowship Services Committee. He is currently serving as secretary of the Australia and New Zealand Society Paediatric Otolaryngology, chair of Mina (aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Committee for RACS) and Cancer Australia’s advisory Board.

Professor Kelvin Kong has been an active advocate for Indigenous Health issues which has led him towards an active involvement in research, lecturing and teaching within the medical community.

The 10am Press Conference

Dr Kerry Chant is the Chief Health Officer of New South Wales, who rose to prominence this year when she appeared on our screens during the daily COVID updates.

Unfazed by the political drama across state borders regarding the pandemic, she demonstrated how public health should be delivered - supported by evidence-based medicine.

Dr Chant has a particular interest in blood borne virus infections, communicable diseases prevention and control, and Indigenous Australian health. She also directed NSW through the SARS and Swine Flu outbreaks with success, and successfully guided the HIV policy in NSW which has resulted in the state having one of the lowest HIV infection rates.

The Summit

Jon’s adventure career began at the age of 14, in 1976 after watching the BBC documentary, ‘Everest The Hard Way.’ He began rock climbing on the cliffs above Wollongong, often alone. John left school at 16 to begin to learn the art of mountaineering on the glaciated mountains of New Zealand. He then made nine expeditions to the Himalayas and 33 to the Andes, climbing new routes of extreme difficulty.

Jon is the first person to be self guided up Everest and walk to the North and South Poles. In 1988 he reached the summit of Everest alone, making the first Sherpaless ascent from the south. He made a new route to the South Pole in 1998 and an unsupported walk to the North Pole in 2002. Jon has made many desert journeys, culminating in the first unsupported traverse of Australia in 2001 and also to the Geographic Centre of Australia in 2007. He has travelled over 6000 kms by sea kayak including a 50 day solo journey and he has sailed across the Pacific Ocean from Fiji to Australia enduring two cyclones at sea.

John was awarded the Order of Australia in 1989, the Centenary Medal in 2001. Jon is the author of,’ Alone Across Australia,’ published by Penguin, he also directed and filmed the documentary, of the same name, which was hailed by, “Men’s Journal Magazine,’ as one of the 20 best adventure films of all time. ‘Suzy and the Simple Man’ 2016, is his sixth film.
